Yellow

When we had our little taste of spring a week ago, I freshened the paint on the door on my house. Our house is two shades of grey with white trim, but with a bright yellow door. When we had our house repainted, I wanted to add a tad of color. The door had been white, and I thought I’d add color there. A local artist friend suggested yellow, so I went to Ace Hardware and got a number of paint strips and let my family vote. The kids loved the bright color. I thought, “Why not, I can always repaint it white”. And so, 5 years later, I still have a bright yellow door.

On my personal Facebook page, I use a smiling yellow sun as my icon. I started it when I was getting tired of the grey skies, and it was my way of expressing that. It was solidified when my brother reminded me that my dad (who died in 1988) used to call me “Sunshine”. Years later, it’s still my icon… if I was an aerosol artist, it would probably be my tag. And on this grey, windy day, as I see my yellow door, I can’t but feel that it represents where Moorhead is today. We are at the cusp of the building season, and I predict that it’s going to be robust. The City’s permit and planning departments are already going gangbusters. There are developers keeping Matt, our Economic Development Director, at full tilt. We have new bike paths, trails, the Heritage and Defiant Garden, new businesses, community meetings and events, art projects, and a myriad of other things ready to gear up in the next couple months. It’s going to a spectacularly yellow spring. Enjoy.
