Where do all the flags come from?

Veteran’s Corner

Jason Hicks | Commander United Patriotic bodies Fargo Memorial Honor Guard

As Memorial Day nears so does the unofficial start of summer. And while many are engaged in the brew ha ha of the start of the season, I ask you to remember the reason. Memorial Day is set aside as an observance to recognize those that have given the ultimate sacrifice upon the alter of freedom. Those killed while serving our great republic.
Just how do those little flags adorn every veteran grave on Memorial Day? We the Veterans organizations have made it happen. How? Volunteers from boys and girl scouts to bank volunteers. We place each and every flag out the Thursday before Memorial Day and they are removed the following Tuesday. We have strived to make all flags uniform in every cemetery in the Fargo Moorhead area. It is so encouraging to see a group of young kids placing the flags at each headstone. We make sure to thank everyone for their efforts and also educate the importance of why. We live in the greatest country in the world.
I would like to give a special shout out to the US Bank employees that place the flags at the Fargo National Cemetery. We are currently over 900 flags at that location alone. And we would not be able to produce such a wonderful and heart felt experience if it wasn’t for wonderful volunteers and friends to support the Fargo National Cemetery as US bank does.
As a reminder the Fargo Memorial Honor Guard in conjunction with Maple Sheyenne church is hosting our annual Memorial Day celebration. Free picnic and awesome live concert from Veteran group Operation Check 6. Event starts at 6:00pm with a all-American picnic meal, short Memorial Day program, live concert and finally taps and rifle salute at dusk.
A complete day schedule will be included next week for all of the area Memorial Day activities.
Thank you, and God bless America.
