“Repeat customers make Vic’s Bar & Grill successful,” stated Jerry Komsrosky. As the owner and operator of Vic’s, he didn’t hesitate for a moment when asked for his secret of success: Loyal employees and customers are the keys to staying in business. The profitability and success depends on the ability to drive traffic and to develop a loyal clientele and the heavy lifting goes to those who serve the customers on a daily basis. Without loyal employees providing excellent service, the most important person, the customer, would simply not return.
Komsrosky grew up in the Tower City, ND area and graduated from high school in the late 1970s. Being around farm equipment as a child, Komsrosky had a natural curiosity of machines and especially cars. That interest led him to the North Dakota State College of Science and he graduated with an automotive parts degree. After working at the John Deere Chevrolet dealership in LaMoure, North Dakota for about a year, Komsrosky found a home with the former Francis Peterson’s auto dealership for 29 years. However, a move to Lunde Auto Center was necessary when Francis Peterson’s closed its doors in 2007.
During those last few years in the auto parts business, Komsrosky explored his options and because of his friendship with Vic’s owner, Doug Fergen, he was first in line when Fergen sold due to health issues. Owning and operating a business that is open every day of the year, Komsrosky hasn’t had time to look back. For those of you who are wondering, yes Christmas day is the busiest day of the year.
Komsrosky and wife Sherri lived in Moorhead for many years where daughter Kristin and son Kraig were raised and graduated from Moorhead high before moving to the lakes area a few years ago. However, serious consideration has been given to moving back to the area. As director of the Minnesota Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC), Sherri travels frequently and could operate from almost any location and with relocation back to Moorhead, Komsrosky could reduce his travel time and of course spend more time at Vic’s.
Komsrosky states that owning a business is full of surprises and he was not quite as prepared as he should have been. As with many first-time entrepreneurs, Komsrosky was surprised with the many types of business expenses and regulations, especially with the food and alcohol business. He quickly discovered that it is a lot more work and less income than expected. Those first few years were some of the toughest and challenging, just like the experts predicted.
