Jason Hicks
Greetings, my name is Jason Hicks. I will be filling in the veterans corner as Tom K seeks political office.
I grew up outside of Glyndon and with the exception of overseas deployment have lived here my whole life. I went to college on the GI Bill and received a Bachelors of Arts in criminal justice from Moorhead State (GO DRAGONS!)
I am an Army Veteran (both active duty and the MN National Guard). I have been active with veterans groups for the past 30 years. Starting with VFW #1223, it used to be the Moorhead VFW, then by moving locations it became the Dilworth VFW again (The Post originally formed in Dilworth).
My current position in the veterans community is as commander of the United Patriotic Bodies. The UPB is a coalition of all of the veterans groups in the Fargo/Moorhead area. Our membership includes three VFW posts (Fargo, Dilworth, West Fargo) Four American Legions Posts (Moorhead, Fargo, West Fargo and Harwood) AMVETs, Vietnam Veterans of America, and Disabled American Veterans. We meet monthly to discuss veteran’s issues and events at our various Posts.
Another position I hold is commander of the Fargo Memorial Honor Guard. We formed in 2019 and conduct all the military ceremonies at the Fargo National Cemetery. This was accomplished by taking members from every service group and forming one cohesive unit. We recognized early that no one organization could conduct daily funerals (often several a day).
When I’m not doing veteran related activities, I enjoy time with my wife of over thirty years and working on our “hobby farm” where we have horses. I am always game for a good ride.
Being also a bit of a military history nerd I like to conclude with the quote:
“People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.”
George Orwell
