UND invites the public to attend symposium:
‘Civility in Public Conversation,”
featuring retired U.S. Sen. Byron Dorgan
Join “Community Conversations on Civility in Politics” with U.S. Sen. (ret.) and North Dakota native Byron Dorgan, with special guest Grand Forks City Councilman Hal Gershman, and moderated by Professor Curt Stofferahn, sociology department and chair of the University Senate, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Monday, May 21, 2012, at the Chester Fritz Library, which is sponsoring this event.
From May 21-25, the University of North Dakota Conflict Resolution Center (CRC) will explore the current state of political and public discourse at its fifth annual “Symposia on Conflict Transformation” seminar. Most events will take place at in the River Valley Room of the UND Memorial Union.
“We are hitting the campaign trail by engaging in one of the hottest topics of our time,” said Kristine Paranica, director of the CRC. “We are inviting our citizens to talk about why we can’t debate and engage without inciting riots and taking hardline and extreme positions; and why Washington has gone from a place where our representatives could have lunch and still fight hard for what they believe to be right, to large empty spaces where you can’t be seen talking to someone across party lines.”
The CRC would like to use the event to provide a better understanding of civility across the United States, in Washington as well as in North Dakota. On Monday, panelists from a variety of backgrounds will discuss the meaning and purposes of civility, with a noon event on successful civil conversations over school closings with Eric Burin. Tuesday is all about our collective experience with incivility and approaches to civility, including a noon event with author Marc Decelle, “How Fargo of You.” Wednesday, May 23 is all about the role of Media including a live radio show with host Jared Thomas, and a guided discussion for all citizens who participate. Lew Bayer, Civility Experts of Winnipeg, will cap the week with a hands-on training on Civility as applied to organizations and the workplace including how to assess civility, how to overcome incivility to build a culture of civility.
