Un-Superbowl 2015 in Arizona

The N.F.L. will play the 2015 Super Bowl–Super Bowl 49–in Glendale, Ariz., a vote of owners decided. Well, that’s nice for the citizens huh? NOT… It’s good for the restaurants, hotels, cab drivers and some, but not for the average citizen, it’s going to cost over three million dollars of taxpayer’s money just for the security. Other city improvements for the bowl are extra!

This happens a lot in our society… sports stadiums, bike trails, cultural and special facilities that benefit a small minority of the average citizen but benefit the merchants. (Which is not always a big deal for the taxpayer.)

You see, a good deal of the time the city councils are made up of merchants themselves… businessmen and woman who make more money every time there are extra people in town.

Did it occur that some organizers of these big events could throw a little in the pot for the taxpayers? Don’t ya think the National Football League could afford footing a little of the bill? Calculate the income of the ticket sales alone of a Super bowl… I don’t think you could get a ticket under $1,000, but could get two tickets for the Green Room at the Bowl for over $7,000.

Income? Wow, think of the TV commercial income, broadcasting rights, food and beverage sales and Super bowl memorabilia sales.

Beefing up fire protection, ambulance, rescue and traffic people, signs, barriers, transit and other various logistics costs a fortune as well.

I think it is great to get more people to town and I like seeing the merchants make money… but let’s be realistic; it often costs the tax payer too much.

They claimed that Super Bowl XLVIII would generate more than $500 million in economic activity for the New Jersey and New York region, is any part of that going to trickle down the tax payers leg? If so, I don’t know how.

If Fargo has a big event…Moorhead hotels and restaurants get a slice of the money without investing anything. Maybe they would like to help with some of the promotion… and vice-versa.

I am just saying to the powers that be, you tax us at the drop of a hat, so when you get some of these BIG events, a little taxation should come into the general fund in our honor.
