Trash Talk

Mara DeRung

As we begin the New Year many people take on the resolution to declutter their homes. Families may have received gifts over the holidays or maybe things have just built up and the house feels cramped. Rather than throwing unwanted items that are in good condition away, take advantage of the different options for getting rid of them. Reusing and recycling can give these things a new life and keep them out of the landfill.
Choosing to pass down or donate items we no longer use rather than putting them in the trash is a great way to make sure they get reused. Relatives and friends are often glad to accept clothes, toys, and other items second hand. It saves them money and time to have tubs of needed goods dropped off at their home. Thrifts stores are always looking for new inventory. The thrift stores also support many good causes in our communities. By donating your unneeded items, you can help support their efforts. Even building materials that are removed during a remodel or materials that are left over can be donated to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Moorhead.
Packaging may have piled up from holiday gifts. Cardboard and boxboard are easily recycled. If you have curbside recycling service, make sure to flatten cardboard and secure it so it does not blow away. If you do not have curbside recycling cardboard and boxboard can be taken to any of the recycling drop sites in Clay County. Please be sure to flatten and secure any cardboard taken to the drop site. Please see the County Website at claycountymn.gov for more information.
Electronics pose special disposal concerns. The county offers two options for residential electronics recycling. Electronics may be dropped off at the recycling shed at the Clay County Landfill or at the Resource Recovery Center in North Moorhead during regular business hours. Please see the Clay County Website at claycountymn.gov for more information.
