Here a few reminders on keeping safe during the summer months.
First, keep hydrated, it can be really easy to get dehydrated in the summer heat. Drink lots and lots of water to stay hydrated. Gatorade, soda, and sugary drinks do not keep you hydrated. Drinks like Gatorade are designed to help with recovery and emergency hydration. Drink your water! Here is a fun tip that I use, if I am going to be outside and doing anything physical, I drink 8oz of organic chocolate milk and follow it with at least 16oz of water. Recently, 4 separate studies have been released showing chocolate milk rehydrates you faster and gives you more benefits than a Gatorade or Powerade.
Second, remember your sunscreen. Even on cloudy days the sun can be especially dangerous. I had a family member go tubing recently on a partly cloudy day and only put sunscreen on once in 8 hrs. Not good, she was burned very badly. Remember sunscreen is only good for a couple hours maximum before it needs to be reapplied.
Lastly, be smart about the things you are doing. Enjoy your summer, but not at the expense of someone else. If you drink, don’t drive or operate any motor vehicle. It is just not worth it.
During summer road construction season, be kind to the guys and gals in the orange zones and slow down.
Around Town
UND named third-healthiest college in U.S.
The University of North Dakota recently was named the third-healthiest college in the United States by Greatist.com, a health and fitness website promoting wellness by providing factual information that leads to healthier lifestyle choices.
Citing UND’s Wellness Center and reasonably priced healthy dining options, Greatist.com said, “Our favorite thing about UND, though, is its ‘7 Dimensions’ approach to wellness, which includes often-overlooked factors like emotional, environmental and spiritual health.
The Greatist.com article noted that UND’s recreation facilities are highly rated by CollegeProwler.com, “as well they should be. The $20 million gym, opened in 2006, was a gift from the students, who voted to add a wellness student fee.”
Mentioning UND’s quality of nutrition, the website said, “Students aiming to eat healthy will love UND’s ‘guiding stars’ rating system, which serves as the yellow brick road to healthy dining options.” Also highlighted were the University’s recreation facilities, as well as the “huge array of free health and fitness assessments.”
The two universities ranked above UND are the University of California, Los Angeles, (UCLA) at No. 1 and Stanford University in California at No. 2.
According to Greatist.com, a “greatest” is described as “someone who chooses better to improve their fitness, health and happiness.” The website refers to itself as “the trusted health and fitness source for the young, savvy and social.”

Upcoming events
Greater Grand Forks County Fair
It’s fair time! Rides, games, food, and entertainment all this and more can be had at the 2012 Greater Grand Forks County Fair. My daughter especially loves the Murphy Bros. Carnival rides, her favorite is the slide. Last year I could not get her off of it, she liked it that much. There will also be racing at the River City Speedway, Lemur Land, Go-cart racing, professional wrestling, a demo-derby, petting zoo, horse show, push-up contests, pull-up contests, hot dog eating contest, and much more. New this year, Greater Grand Forks Fair organizers are offering a $5.00 access pass which includes all grandstand events (so you don’t have to pay per event). If you buy a Murphy Brothers midway pass in advance from Valley Dairy or Hugo’s, you also get the gate admission included for free. This is fun for the whole family. The fair runs June 27th through July 1st at the Grand Forks County Fairgrounds. For more information please go to www.grandforksfair.com or call 701-330-1238. I cannot wait to see everyone there!
Tops In Blue
If you have never seen Tops In Blue, this is your chance. This is one of the coolest and fun shows, not to mention it brings out the patriot in us all. According to TopsinBlue.com, “Tops In Blue is an all-active duty US Air Force special unit made up of talented amateur performers selected for their entertainment abilities. Tops In Blue is one of the oldest and most widely traveled entertainment groups of its kind. Composed of 35 to 40 of the most talented vocalists, musicians, dancers, and technicians anywhere, their primary purpose is to perform for military personnel and their families throughout the world. However, the enormous popularity of the group has also made them America’s goodwill ambassadors around the globe.”
Tops In Blue will perform at the Chester Fritz Auditorium, Saturday, June 30th at 7 P.M. The best part is it’s a free show the entire family will enjoy. According to Topsinblue.com, “The 2012 tour, entitled “Listen!” invites the audience to listen to the music of life through the sounds we hear every day. It features the dynamic rhythms of The Doobie Brothers, Earth, Wind & Fire, Whitney Houston, and Maroon 5. This year’s tour also showcases the great country music of Darius Rucker, Carrie Underwood, Lady Antebellum, and The Zac Brown Band. Of course, no TOPS IN BLUE show would be complete without the great patriotic music that honors our nation and its heroes. Add the high energy precision choreography and dazzling visual impact TOPS IN BLUE is known for and every member of the audience will be singing along and dancing in their seats.”
