Step up and volunteer

Veteran’s Corner

Jason Hicks | Commander United Patriotic bodies
Fargo Memorial Honor Guard

Greetings fellow Veterans and supporters.
With the end of summer here, I would like to take the moment to thank our area Veterans groups for a job well done. Flag presentations, parades, food drives and of course our scared funerals, we are truly blessed to have such a wonderful group of dedicated volunteers.
On a personal note I recently returned from interning my uncle at the Western Montana Veterans cemetery. Seeing the VFW and American Legion members perform the scared rituals of rifle volley and taps from a spectator point of view is truly impressive. The thing that struck me was the age of the volunteers, it truly mirrored what we have at the Fargo National cemetery. Men in the 60s, 70s and 80s. The man who presented the shell casing had to use a walker, but he still did his duty. I often wonder what will happen in the future. We have so many Veterans in the area yet so few are willing to step up and volunteer to help. But that being said, I also have faith that when the time comes people will step up. As I’ve stated to many people, the heart felt satisfaction of being able to render military services can not be duplicated with any type of money. It makes me complete.
I would like to thank VFW life member Virginia Kraushar for organizing a food drive with Fargo area Veterans groups, $5932 was raised and 437lbs of food. This is the 4th year and it continues to grow. Thank you for your dedication for helping others Virginia.
