22-year old Bemidji State University student Jared Zezel will be competing in the curling competition this week at the Sochi Olympics. Originally from Hibbing, Minnesota, Zezel was part of the first place team at the 2013 US Olympic Curling Trials. As of Monday, the United States has won five overall medals: Jamie Anderson and Sage Kotsenburg both won gold in the Slopestyle Finals, Hannah Kearney scored a bronze in the Ladies Moguls, Julie Mancuso finished with a bronze in Alpine Skiing Super Combined, and the Figure Skating team finished with a bronze in the team competition. The United States Women’s Hockey team secured a spot in the semi-finals with a 9-0 shutout against Switzerland. UND and Grand Forks native Monique Lamoureux finished with two goals.
