Screen Free Week

If you have ‘liked’ my Mayor Del Rae Williams page on Facebook, you may know that I participated in a promotion of Screen Free Week. Heather Zinger, who is working with PartnerShip 4 Health and Springboard for the Arts, made a huge cardboard TV for me to carry around for 4 days as I took pictures and blogged my experiences of going Screen Free. Screen Free Week is May 4 to 11th. Individuals are asked to “watch no TV or DVDs, play no video or mobile games, and only use the computer if it’s required for work for a week.”

I dragged it to meetings, events, a Mayors Conference in Fergus Falls, and explained it for 4 days, while participating in the Challenge myself. What I learned was 1) Quiet it okay… I can get a lot of good ideas when it’s quiet. 2) I can relax better if I read rather than watch something on my laptop before going to bed. 3) And I’m a little addicted to Facebook, and maybe it’s okay to limit my time on it. I don’t really need to know what everyone had for supper every day; I can pick and choose a little better, and perhaps get back to using a timer. 4) I really missed reading a book for fun. Learn more by checking out www.screenfree.org or screenfreeweek2014# on Facebook. I hope you will consider trying it too.
