Scandinavian/Midwest Viking Festival

The Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County and the Nordic Culture Clubs presented the 38th Annual Scandinavian Hjemkomst and the Midwest Viking Festival, a celebration of Nordic culture from ancient times to today, on June 26 and 27, at the Hjemkomst Center in Moorhead.

This event drew more than 4000 people to experience a wide variety of Scandinavian and Viking cultures. Some of this year’s highlights included fabulous entertainment, a live Viking village and a variety of Scandinavian cuisine.

Executive Director of the Nordic Culture Clubs, Angela Beaton praised the top-notch performers, “I heard wonderful things about every performance but particularly the New York Kammermusiker and TheTwoTalls were fan-favorites. We would love to have both back in the future!” Performers came from all over the world, but many of them we have right here in the upper Midwest which embraces and perpetuates Scandinavian heritage. A variety of living history storytellers including Kari Tauring and Jan Smith shared their stories from Viking Era Scandinavia, enchanting kids of all ages.

While inside the Hjemkomst Center, the scents of Finnish pastries, and Swedish meatballs filled the air, you could also see the traditional crafts and artisans from more the 20 vendors throughout the building. Outside, there was a live Viking Village filled with costumed re-enactors showcasing live blacksmithing, coin striking, leather work, Viking age lathe and weaving techniques. “The live steel Viking Battles were a huge draw for the crowds throughout the weekend” says HCS Event Coordinator Jeff Swenson, “every battle was different, and the live steel action this year was exciting to watch.”

This dual festival was a unique experience as both partnering organizations strive to present a fun learning experience. Visitors of all ages could see history with the wide variety of activities and art being showcased. Many visitors were encouraged to try making pots like a Viking, or spinning wool, and weaving.

The Hjemkomst Center was filled with enthusiasm throughout the weekend, and it was great to see all of the families come and enjoy this unique cultural experience, right here in Moorhead.
