Respect

Veteran’s Corner

Tom Krabbenhoft

This week the Fargo Memorial Honor Guard paid respects to Clay County’s last living Civil War Veteran. It was cold and rainy. As always they performed their duty.

They have found 79 Civil War Veterans in Clay County. This is amazing considering the population of the County at the time. Minnesota entered statehood in 1858, the Civil War ended in 1865. This shows a commitment from those in the area to serve.

This commitment is still evident from the National Guard units in the area. We have several Army Guard/Reserve units, an Air Guard and a Naval Reserve unit within the FM area.

Expand the circle 75 miles and several other units exist. Several in Grand Forks, plus the Grand Forks Air Force Base. Detroit Lakes, Wahpeton just to name a few.

As you can see our veterans community is large in both population and real estate wise.

Recently an E-Tabs summit was held. E-Tabs are a gaming device on a small notebook. You can choose to play several games on them. The MN legislators passed some laws that will several hurt non-profits in the state.

These were implemented as a way to fund the new Vikings stadium. They’ve been so popular the revenue from them paid off the stadium ahead of time.

As with anything successful, greed and envy showed up and cried foul with E-Tabs success. Mysteriously, language showed in a bill that would effectively shut down E-Tabs.

This needs to be rectified immediately! Charities will lose millions. Locally Veterans, Elderly and animal charities will feel a large hit. Volunteer rural Fire Departments will be affected. Estimated losses between  Moorhead American Legion, losses of 230K, Moorhead youth Hockey of over a million dollars, Dilworth Lions 315K, Dilworth VFW 311K.

These are only four of the local charities that will take a loss.

I will definitely be covering this more as it’s catastrophic for charity.
