“Think before you click, think before you post, think before you share too much information,” said Randy Farwell. “The more people know about you, especially the people you don’t know and can’t trust, the more you are at risk.” As the Senor Sales Consultant at 702 Communications, Farwell is very concerned with not only keeping their customers connected, but keeping them safe as well.
The company was started in 1999 to provide local phone services, Internet, networking, and support to our local areas of Fargo-Moorhead and Wahpeton-Breckenridge. 702 Communications is the only locally owned and operated company providing retail services that include business and residential phone service and Internet access. In addition, 702 also provides network engineering, management, and monitoring for regional transport and data networking. Major customers for 702 Communications include the City of Moorhead, MSUM, Concordia, and the Moorhead High School.
Growing up on a farm in Alberta, MN near Morris, Farwell learned early that there is always something that needs to be done from picking rocks, pulling weeds, to repairing equipment. His dad instilled in him the importance of always putting things back where they belong so you know where they are the next time they are needed. He is thankful for his early training, as it has served him well in the world of technology where detail and follow through are essential.
Family life is an important component for Randy. His wife Sherri and daughter Claire are the center of his life and the top of his priorities. Sherri has been the finance officer for the city of Dilworth for 15 years and Claire is a junior at Moorhead High School and is active in music and golf. They enjoy spending time together and getting away from the daily routine with camping, traveling, and golfing.
Farwell attended North Dakota State College of Science primarily to play football and track, but quickly realized that education was the key to his success. Upon graduating with a two-year associate degree, he transferred to NDSU and graduated with a double major in agriculture and business. While attending college he worked part time at UPS where he recognized that management skills, not just knowledge, were critically important to the success of people and organizations. The lessons that have paid dividends throughout his career.
702 Communications has been Farwell’s employment home for 15 years. He began as an agent for Rural Cellular Corp in Alexandria, MN, where he had made sales calls to 702. When his sales position at RCC was eliminated, he interviewed with 702 Communications President Jim Walter on a Monday and was hired on Tuesday. It has been an exciting time as the industry is constantly changing and evolving. “No two days are the same, with different customer interactions each day. Customers are driving 702 to stay ahead of their daily needs and expectations.” However, he adds that it is very rewarding when a customer calls and is looking for advice. It may not be a service that 702 provides, but after many years of interacting and networking, he is able to point them to the right resource.
Staying connected is important to many people explained Farwell. “As technology changes the way we communicate, you can expect 702 to keep pace with the needs of our local communities – from dial-up to Wi-Fi, we’ll make sure you stay connected.”
