Organizational changes for the EDA

Economic development comes in a variety of functions within an organization. How an economic development agency or office works may likely depend on the functioning organizational structure of the governing entities (City, County, State etc.). Moorhead has had some form of a development agency for decades beginning with a Housing Redevelopment Authority later being renamed to the Economic Development Authority or “EDA.”

In 2013, City leaders desired to enhance staffing in economic development and created a new position solely focused on business and economic development activities. I have had the honor and privilege of serving in this capacity for nearly two years. As visions, goals, and objectives evolve within organizations so do positions.

Earlier this week, the EDA Board of Commissioners and the City Council considered the concept to locate the economic development “wing” of the City into a stronger presence downtown and to also give them authority in hiring their own executive director. Both the EDA and City Council unanimously recommended taking the next step which directs the City Manager, EDA Executive Director, and City Attorney to investigate the technical details and analyze the two ideas for consideration with a report back to both boards at the end of March.

Having a visual, accessible presence in downtown Moorhead would be an added benefit to the business community, residents, and overall image of being open for business. I am eager to work on the details and provide a report back to our elected and appointed officials for further actionable consideration. I support this concept and would be interested in hearing back from community and business leaders on what you think. See you around town!
