Veteran’s Corner
Tom Krabbenhoft
Greetings, there is a lot going on in the veterans world this week.
The AMVET Riders Chapter 7, in Fargo held a motorcycle ride to the ND Veterans home in Lisbon. They stayed a while and visited with the veterans in the home. I was told they had ice cream for those on the motorcycles. Best of all they donated $500 to the home which will be used for the veterans recreation. Well done Wayne and all involved.
Theta Chi Fraternity at NDSU held their Tacos and Tunes event on Friday. In a few short hours they raised over $1,000 for the USO.
United Service Organization (USO) supports the wellbeing of those serving the country. Theta Chi Fraternity nationwide is the second largest supporter of the USO, behind the NFL. Salute to these local young men.
Fix It Forward is having their community picnic next week. May 16th, 6pm at the 52nd Ave S. location. They are close to giving away their 500th car. Over 25% of their cars go to veterans. Thanks for your support of veterans.
The Fargo Memorial Honor Guard will be holding their community picnic on Memorial Day. Time and details to follow.
A disgusting and sad act of vandalism took place. The Garden of Healing by the Scheels Arena Fargo. Lights and plants were destroyed along with other senseless damage. The Garden is intended to be a place where ALL people can heal.
One of the areas especially hit hard is a small piece of the garden designated for veterans. A stone bubbler with POW/MIA was broken in half. Other damage was done to the bubbler. A very senseless and stupid act that hurts the entire community.
Please help them out if you can.
One of the most unrecognized and most important people of any conflict are nurses.
May 6-12 is National Nurses week. Nurses have participated in every conflict the US has ever been involved in. There was 82 nurses at or near Pearl Harbor on that day of infamy. 59,000 nurses served during WW2. Casualties were reduced greatly when nurses had a presence on the battlefield.
During the Japanese invasion of the Phillipines 99 nurses were taken prisoner. Most of them fell under the command of 57 year old Maude Davison, 2nd was Josie Nesbit. Under their guidance the nurses set up a hospital and began regular shifts. They saved thousands while being held prisoner.
“We Band of Angels” is one of the books written about these truly brave ladies.
These nurses truly earned the nickname “Angels of Corregidor” or the “Battling Belles of Bataan.”
Thank you nurses everywhere.
