It’s clear we are not the only ones that enjoy living in Moorhead. Turkeys seem to be enjoying areas that they’ve never really ventured into before. They aren’t new to our community. I remember about 5 years ago having a two-some that later had about half a dozen baby turkeys (poults) in my backyard. I think a number of us can also remember the turkeys that were hanging around the Hjemkomst Center that became newsworthy when they were a little aggressive with passing cars. What does seem new this year is the quantity. A herd… or more correctly a rafter of turkeys. 2 to 3 dozen at a time. While they do bring smiles to a lot of people, they do have their downfalls. They are wild. Watch from a distance, and if you are concerned for immediate safety, don’t hesitate to call our Police Department. Shooting turkeys in City limits (or out of City limits when it’s not hunting season) is not a legal option for residents. We have contacted the Minnesota DNR and have applied for a limited permit, which will give our police department options should they pose an urgent significant safety risk to an individual. In the meantime, let’s enjoy them as they tour our fair city.
