When area residents want to offer help during the holidays, non-profit organizations frequently come to mind. Two Moorhead organizations offer simple ways to offer practical assistance to those in need this season.
Churches United operates a transistional shelter and an emergency shelter, as well as a food shelf, support groups, spiritual guidance and three meals a day, seven days a week at 1901 Avenue North in Moorhead. "The most efficient way to help us is through a financial donation", said Community Center Director Lisa Lipari. "For children and infants, we need winter gear like warm hats, gloves, snowpants, and jackets." To coordinate a donation, please contact
Andera DeMars at ademars@churches-united.org or call 218-236-0372.
Moorhead's Dorothy Day House of Hospitality and Food Pantry seeks similarly practical assistance. "We are always looking for gently used men's clothing and food for both our food pantry and the house," said Jo-Kat Koesterman, a shelter advocate. Canned food donations may be brought to the food pantry at 1308 Main Avenue in Moorhead. Individuals interested in donating clothing or small groups interested in preparing a family-style meal should contact 218-233-5763.
