“We’re Got You Covered and More,” said Roger Stuhaug. As owner and operator of Moorhead Flooring and More, Stuhaug has been covering things up as long as he can remember.
The Gary, MN native with four siblings grew up on a 60-cow dairy farm that taught him the importance of dependability and diligence in life and work. Most dairy farmers milk their cows with absolute regularity at a minimum of twice a day; Stuhaug recalls that the daily milking routine goes on year-long.
That sense of duty led to 4 years of military service in the National Guard, followed with the position of Commander of the American Legion. That dedication has served him well in the business world, providing his customers with not only quality products, but with the understanding that their needs and expectations come first. The personalized service includes home visits to ensure that the product meets the customers’ expectations. “You have to do what you have to do to satisfy the customer,” he added.
As the sole employee of the store, “I am the business,” he said. Stuhaug’s guiding principle is to be honest and straightforward even if it gets in the way of an immediate sale. This motto is working for him, as he stated that he has great grandchildren of previous customers patronizing the store.
With 25 years of carpet installation experience, Stuhaug opened his first storefront, 5 to 9 Carpet Sales, north of Dilworth in 1997. It was so named because after a day’s work as a groundskeeper at the Fargodome, he would open at 5pm to 9pm. That schedule became unworkable after the 2000 flood. The increase demand for carpet and installation caused by the flood provided an opportunity to expand his operation. Stuhaug left his Fargodome position and entered the business world fulltime, which led him to his current location at 2nd Avenue North, Moorhead in 2004.
Fortunately, his wife, Debbie, who is the loan manager at the Fargo Public School Credit Union, has the expertise to handle the accounting side of the business, allowing Stuhaug fulltime dedication to merchandising and customer service. Not only have they been successful business partners, they have raised two children, a son age 33 living in Colorado, and a daughter age 29 living in Moorhead. In addition to enjoying their role as grandparents of four grandchildren, Stuhaug is an avid bow hunter and downhill skier having just returned from a few days of relaxation at a Colorado ski slope. Recharged, it was apparent that he was ready to leave the slopes and return to the aisles of retail.
