The city of Moorhead has received a $1 million grant from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development to use for costs related to downtown Center Mall redevelopment.
Economic development consultant Derrick LaPoint announce the award at the regular meeting of the Moorhead City Council Monday/
The grant program is geared to helping communities with the costs of redeveloping “blighted industrial, residential or commercial sites and putting the land back into productive use,” he said. Funds will be used to complete demolition of the mall through a subgrant with MCM Development LLC, which will provide the local match.
LaPoint noted that MNDEED sets aside $2 million for these grants each year, half for to metropolitan cities and the rest to smaller municipalities. Moorhead’s amount represents fully half of the 2024 award. Six other grants of from $88,000 to $545,000 were shared by Albert Lea, Cloquet, Hutchinson, La Crescent, Scott County and White Bear Lake.
