You might have heard that Moorhead is expected to be one of the sites selected by Minnesota Medical Solutions (MMS), one of the two organizations the State has authorized to grow and distribute marijuana for medical purposes. Earlier this year I and some city and county staff met with Minnesota Medical Solutions. There were to be 8 facilities, one in each Congressional District. Moorhead is the largest city in the 7th District. It made sense.
I imagine we’ll hear more in the news, but I thought I can tell you what I know. This is headed by a medical doctor, who has an interest in research. His main research seemed to center on the ability to gauge the efficacy of the drug when the “buzz” is taken out. It will only be in pill or oil form. The other take-away that I got from our meeting is that our local enforcement agencies, city and county, are comfortable with the idea and will work closely with MMS to ensure good safety procedures. The facility will not be like a Walgreens, where anyone can simply walk in. It will not have a green leaf logo, and you probably won’t even notice that it is there.
I imagine there will be a number of citizens that will appreciate the convenience for their loved one. My brother died of lung cancer last year. He talked about using marijuana to enhance his appetite and for pain management and I wish this had been an option for him then. I believe this will be beneficial to many in our community.
