Members of the Moorhead City Council and the mayor will get 3% raises in the new year — the first time the amounts they receive have been boosted in 16 years.
At Monday’s meeting, the council approved the first reading of an ordinance that make modest increases in the amounts the elected official receive each month during their terms of office. The total impact on the city budget during the first year of the two-year measure is $3,200.
Mayor Shelly Carlson’s monthly stipend will go up $96 in 2023 and an additional $99 in 2024. She currently is paid $1,623 per month, the amount set back in 2006 for calendar year 2008.
The eight members of the council will each receive $51 more in 2023 and an additional $52 in 2024. They now are paid $851 per month of service, also dating back to 2008.
The raises will go into effect in January if again approved on second reading on Dec. 13.
