Street lights in five areas of Moorhead will shed more light on the city’s commitment to saving energy in coming months – helping the city reach another of its GreenStep Cities environmental sustainability goals.
The Moorhead City Council accepted a $76,470 grant from the Department of Energy at its meeting Monday, July 22. The funds – an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant voucher – will cover the cost and installation of energy-efficient LED lighting along five heavily traveled commercial corridors throughout the city.
The areas include Eighth Street from 12th to 50th Avenues South; 34th Street from Highway 10 to Main Avenue Southeast; 40th Avenue South from Highway 75 to 20th Street South; 14th Street South from 37th to 41st Avenues South; and 30th Avenue South in the MCCARA Industrial Park.
According to assistant city planner Ethan Johnk, the move to LEDs will help the city achieve sustainability goal 5.2 of its Onward Moorhead Comprehensive Plan, which calls for “continuing and advancing work and partnerships in Minnesota’s GreenStep Cities program.” The city achieved the level of the statewide environmental initiative two years ago and has continued to work toward its 29“best practices.
Goals of the Onward Moorhead plan, adopted in 2022, include “promoting the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions through alternative energy sources and sustainable transportation solutions.”
