Main Avenue at 15th Street

FARGO, N.D. (April 29, 2014) –Main Avenue will be reduced to one lane of travel in each direction at 15th Street starting Wednesday, April 30, due to emergency storm sewer repairs on the south side of the street. Vehicles will not be allowed to turn onto 15th Street from Main Avenue. This closure will remain in place until Tuesday, May 6, allowing for the concrete patches to cure.

The Village is planning a North Dakota Children’s Home/Children’s Village Reunion and wants to invite all former residents (and their families).

The Village Family Service Center was founded as the North Dakota Children’s Home Society, a home for orphaned children. In the 1950s, the name was changed to Children’s Village, and in the early 70s, to The Village Family Service Center. Today, The Village serves more than 85,000 people a year, and is constantly adapting services to meet the needs of modern life. Today, The Village is a place for everyone, with services that include individual and family counseling, childcare, mentoring, adoption, financial wellness consulting, workplace programs, and substance abuse treatment.

Residents asked to

discharge sump pumps outside

FARGO, N.D. (April 29, 2014) – With the recent rains and increased flow in the sanitary sewer system, Fargo residents who have bypass waivers are asked to divert sump discharge outside. City regulations require that residents discharge their sump pumps into a yard or a storm sewer from April 1 – September 30.

FARGO, ND (April 29, 2014)--If you have some spare room in your garden, or would like to try growing a new vegetable this year, try buttercup squash! The group, One Vegetable, One Community, wants to unite the Fargo Moorhead communities by encouraging gardeners to grow, cook and share a single vegetable – buttercup squash.

Beginning May 5, 1000 free starter kits with buttercup squash seeds, growing tips, recipes, and plant markers will be available at: The Agassiz Building, Cass County Social Services, Clay County Social Services, Family HealthCare Center, Fargo Cass Public Health, Fargo Public Library-Main and Carlson locations, the FM Community Bike Shop, the Moorhead Public Library and Red Raven.

Sara Van Offelen, from the University of Minnesota Extension Service, says the group’s goal is to get people talking about local food, “We want to create access to fresh, healthy food in our community. Squash is the 2014 One Vegetable, One Community vegetable because it taste greats, is easy to grow, and packed with nutrients.” The Prairie Road Organic Seed Company provided the seeds for this year’s vegetable.

City of Fargo prepares for Red

River to reach moderate flood stage

FARGO, N.D. (April 28, 2014) –The National Weather Service is predicting the Red River in Fargo will reach moderate flood stage, approximately 25.7 feet, by Friday, May 2. No emergency flood protection measures are expected to be taken during this flood event however the Public Works Department will be closing storm sewer gates and Fargo storm sewer lift stations will become operational.

The following streets are expected to be closed:

Elm Street between 14th – 15th Avenues.

The North Broadway Bridge will likely close when the river reaches 22-23 feet. A public announcement will be made if this bridge closes.

Gate City Bank donates

more than $173,000 to charities

Moorhead, Minn.– From January through March, Gate City Bank donated more than $173,000 to organizations across North Dakota and western Minnesota as part of its ongoing commitment to support local communities and causes.

The following Moorhead organizations received donations:

· Dorothy Day House

· Moorhead Cougar Basketball

· MSUM Dragonfire Athletics Scholarship

Gate City Bank also made donations to regional organizations including the Boy Scouts of America Northern Lights Council, Make-A-Wish Foundation, ND Alzheimer’s Association, Special Olympics, United Way and YMCA.

Cleanup Week scheduled for May 5 – 9

FARGO, N.D. (April 28, 2014)– Cleanup Week, May 5 – 9, is an opportunity for residents to dispose of unwanted items and appliances free of charge. Electronics will not be collected curbside during cleanup week but can be disposed of free of charge at the Household Hazardous Waste facility or at the Annual Electronics Recycling Event on Saturday, May 3. Residents are asked to follow these guidelines during Cleanup Week:

· Set out garbage before 7 a.m. on your pickup day on boulevard only. We will throw away any container that is not a garbage can.

Limit two appliances per household. We collect logs and brush up to 10” in diameter. We collect tires and rims. No wood, building materials, or concrete will be accepted. We will accept small propane tanks if valves are removed.

Electronics such as televisions and computers should not be set out for pickup. Instead, please recycle them during our Electronics Recycling Event on Saturday, May 3 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fargo Solid Waste, 2301 8th Ave. N. For more information call 701-241-1449. These items can also be recycled at household hazardous waste year round. See the next bulleted point for HHW information.

Do not set waste oil, paints, varnishes and other household hazardous waste (HHW) out for pickup. These items can be taken to our HHW building at 606 43 1/2 St. N. This building is open year-round; call 281-8915 for more information. Hours for the HHW are:

Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Wednesdays: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Second Saturday of each month: 8 a.m. to noon.

The landfill is open year-round to accept large items for a fee. Landfill hours are:

Monday through Friday: 7:15 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Saturday: 7:15 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Sunday: Closed

Fargo has 14 drop-off sites for yard waste.
