veteran’s corner

Very sadly the Lake Park American Legion burned down. It was a very nice post and a gathering spot for the local residents. Many Legion posts across the country are closing, shutting down or even abandoning altogether. This is a silent national tragedy and loss. Legion posts are non-profit and they add to the community. One of the major by-laws of the American Legion is to dedicate funds to support youth. They support many things. The community of Lake Park will rebuild theirs and we should support them throughout the process. Way to go Lake Park!
On April 3rd a fundraiser was held by the FM Legion Riders at the Moorhead American Legion. All proceeds went to rebuilding the Lake Park Legion. A little over $10,500 was raised in a few hours. Thanks to all that supported this incredible effort.
The Fargo Air Museum will hold its monthly veterans coffee hour next Wednesday April 13th. It’s held on the second Wednesday of every month from 10am-12. Veterans can enjoy FREE Sandys Donuts and coffee. Thanks Fargo Air Museum for doing this. Did I mention the FM Legion Riders funded the donuts for a year?
Ukraine update- things are still going very badly for the Russians. Patting myself on the back I predicted a Russian butt whooping in this column. Other people were saying it’s a matter of days before the Russians take over. Wars have many components other than troop, armor, artillery and aircraft numbers.
Recently Ukrainians in one area welcomed many Russian troops. They even generously fed and provided drinks for them. This resulted in several Russian troops dead from tainted food and dozens are in the hospital. This is fighting with any means at your disposal. These were mothers and grandmothers that did this. Once again failing to recognize history.
As of today they’ve found many dead Ukrainians in the streets. The troops are taking these losses personal and are losing their command structure and committing atrocious acts against civilians. This will galvanize Ukrainian resolve and further turn the world against them.
The Ukrainians also struck and destroyed a fuel depot IN Russia. They used their deadly MI-24 Hind D helicopters. This tells me their (Russian) airspace command and control is nonexistent. The Russians pulled back a couple of days later. Oops someone really screwed up and they are at best in a Gulag.
I’ve also read reports many Russian troops around Chernobyl have been sickened with radiation poisoning.
March 29th was Vietnam Veterans day. If you did not reach out to a Vietnam Veteran that day, do so today. They need to be remembered all year like all veterans.
Next week- Patriots day, a long overdue celebration. More Ukraine updates and summer activities.
