High and Dry in 2014

With the 5 year anniversary of the 2009 Flood, those days are forefront in our minds. We were all watching and listening. Like other families, we were volunteering to sandbag, make sandwiches, help friends move things and drive volunteers. It was an anxious time for the whole city, but especially for those that built dikes by their homes and needed to keep watch to make sure they stayed solid. It was also a time when it highlighted how amazing our community can come together. It’s no surprise that the Nation was spellbound by the community that fought for each other.

Moorhead was taken a little by surprise. Prior to that year, we had not been fighting yearly flood waters. I’m proud of how Moorhead rose to the occasion, but more importantly proud of how Mark Voxland and our City Council later took action to solve our vulnerability. This Legislative session, we hope to get our last piece of funding to finish our Flood Protection to the 2012 FEMA Study levels. We are then prepared to do the work this year, and submit for FEMA Levy Certification for those final parts in 2015. It’s a great feeling to be high and dry in 2014.
