High and Dry

I can’t say this enough… I am pleased and proud that Mayor Voxland and then Council made the choice to take flood work head on right after the 2009 Flood. Five years later, we are accepting bids and starting work for the last leg of projects to complete what they saw was needed post-2009 flood. Are we really done? That’s probably the multi-million dollar question… literally.

Moorhead can boast 4 feet of additional height but the truth is our greater community is so intertwined that a huge Fargo flood does impact us greatly. If you watch and read our greater community’s flood discussions, you probably know that flood level needs seem to move. FEMA also adds a moving target for flood levels and how protection is certified. Minnesota DNR is involved in work for their recommendation, and we expect will complete their draft next May. In the meantime, the City of Moorhead continues to do our work to best protect our City. I often am questioned about my stance on the FM Diversion. I’ve got to say that I don’t see it that black and white. I tend to focus on what the engineers say, and not the politicians. I helped clean up a good friend’s Dairy Queen in Grand Forks after their major flood. I grew up in Minot, and saw what a major flood can do to that town. Years from now, I don’t want to look back, and think “if only we had…” Much like when you know you need major surgery, and decide to have a second opinion at Mayo Clinic, I see MN’s DNR as our Mayo Clinic visit. May of 2015 will be an interesting month.
