Moorhead resident Heather Keeler has announced her candidacy for Minnesota House seat in District 4A, which includes Moorhead and Oakport Township. Keeler, a graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead, has lived in Moorhead for seven years.
“As we seek solutions for the problems we face today and in the future, we need to be sure we are including all Minnesotans in our decision-making process,” Keeler said. “Some of these issues include education, housing, healthcare, human rights and economic sustainability. I am confident in my ability to be a voice at the table who will include and fight for all of our populations, because I have been doing that my whole life.”
Although she says being a mom of two boys is her favorite role, Keeler wears many hats and is actively engaged in the community. She is assistant director for multicultural recruitment at North Dakota State University; previously she was employed by the Moorhead public school district as a Native American liaison. As an advocate for equitable and inclusive practices, she is vice chair of the Moorhead Human Rights Commission. She also serves on the Fargo Native American Commission.
“I have been passionate about being involved in community change ever since high school. In all of the work I do, I strive to be the person I wish I had known when I was growing up,” she said. “It’s extremely important to me that we create change through collaboration and community understanding. When we work together we can achieve so much more, and when we spend time working alongside our community members, committees, and organizations, we learn more about the needs of all people. We all matter, and we all deserve to have our voices heard.”
Keeler’s campaign platform includes investing in educational equity, expanding affordable housing, enhancing economic stability, closing the pay gap, and increasing broadband access. She holds a bachelor’s degree in project management and a master’s in educational leadership.
