Happy New Year! It has been a wild 2012 and is looking to gear up for a wild 2013! So what do most people do when it comes to a new year? They set resolutions, then they break them, and then forget about them altogether.

So let’s look at what you can do to make good resolutions and keep them.

First, get rid of the idea of a resolution. Let’s call it what it is, a goal. Goals need to follow a process in order to be successful. Goals fall into two categories: short term and long term. A short term goal is meant to be a small step that works you toward a long term goal. Short term goals should be easy to accomplish and attainable in no more than two weeks and should be a stepping stone to a long term goal. Long term goals, can be anywhere from one month to several years. When setting goals one should start from the finish and work backwards. This gives you a road map on how to get there. Would you go on a trip of a thousand miles without a map or GPS? Not unless you have been there before. It would not make any sense to do that. So, take your long term goal and divide it into a few smaller long term goals. Then take those long term goals and break them down even further into what I call the baby steps. The baby steps are basically your short term goals. These baby steps are the things will get you to that long term goal. Make sure that the baby steps are easily attainable and lead into the next step. The most successful people are usually the best at goal setting. These people will even work their baby steps into daily goals. That is usually what sets them apart from everyone else, they are organized almost to a fault.

Now, you have your goals set for the New Year. What’s left then? Well then it’s time to implement them and stick to them. Put your goals somewhere that you can look at them every day. The more you remind yourself, the better and more likely you will be able to finish your goal. Then stay disciplined and get stubborn. Another overlooked part is to not only believe that you can accomplish your goal, but to know you can do it.

So make those goals realistic, and then stick to them! I look forward to hearing home many of you actually stuck through.
