Girls Hockey Returns to State, Finishes Sixth

After a one-year absence, the Moorhead High School Girls Hockey team returned to the Class AA State Tournament at the Xcel Energy Center after earning their fifth Section 8AA championship.
The Spuds, the top seed in the Section 8AA Tournament, rampaged through the sectional bracket: routing Sartell-Sauk Rapids 11-0 in their first playoff game before bouncing #4 Alexandria 4-1. In a rematch of last year’s section final, Moorhead avenged their 2024 defeat with a resounding 6-1 victory over second-seeded Roseau to head back to St. Paul.
At State, the Spuds earned the #4 seed but dropped their tournament opener 3-1 to red-hot #5 Holy Family. Moorhead bounced back on Day Two, blanking Farmington 4-0. Falling to Andover in the consolation final, the Spuds would finish sixth in Class AA.
Following the tournament, Moorhead senior forward Olivia Kortan won the Herb Brooks Award, presented to a state tournament participant that strongly represents the values, characteristics and traits that defined the legendary coach.
With their deep playoff run, the Spuds finished the year with a 21-9-1 record.
