For the Love of Rover

I took another long bike ride through the Fargo Moorhead area this past weekend. In my journey you couldn’t help but notice that about one out of every four people was walking a dog. That’s right, man’s best friend!

I don’t have to tell you about how many sizes they come in, but the majority was very well behaved and gave me just a casual glance as I passed by.

But try to stop and tell the owner how cute a dog he or she has and you might be there for a while getting the dog’s life story. Which in a couple of cases were more interesting than that of their owner’s.

One lady was walking a beautifully groomed Pomeranian. It was extremely friendly and barely gave a little “yip” as I approached. The story was that one of her co-workers had got her kids the dog. After a couple of months the kids found other things they wanted to play with and ignored the little cutie. Her co-worker asked her if she wanted it and she said absolutely. Mom then apparently told the kids you can have your next dog when you graduate and leave home. There’s a lesson there folks.

I also ran into a couple with a black lab cross they adopted but the cool story was about the cat they had at home. They had found him with a broken tail and a gash on its side. They got him to a local veterinarian to get patched up and were told the cat was more than likely under the hood of a car and someone started it up and he got caught in the fan. They said that was four years ago, and they still have him.

Yet one more woman was walking two smaller sized dogs and told me they were brother and sister. They were both so darn cute she told me, “I couldn’t decide on which one so I took them both.”

Throughout the years, many friends have gone the adoption route. Just look at Mike McFeely and his dog “Rudy”. The agencies in town do wonders in finding homeless pets a caring home. If you’re looking for a pet…why not give the adoption route a try?

One more note about dogs. I was asked to share this again. My lovely little niece Hannah had sent me a picture of her with a dog that belongs to her boyfriend’s parents. Here’s “Lobo” the Irish Wolf hound. In this picture Lobo is 9 MONTHS OLD! They also have “Jake” who is a Great Pyrenees. Rumor has it that for clean-up duties, instead of a shovel…they use a Bobcat Loader!!!
