Election Day musings

I’m writing this column on Election Day. I don’t know who will win, but I do know voting, as of 1PM, seems to be good. That alone is a win. Minnesota is known for our high voting percentages. According to an article in the Christian Science Monitor, Minnesota has led in our nation in voter turnout in 12 of the last 16 presidential elections. That is something to be proud of. Minnesotans care about what happens in our communities. My son, who is 19, voted today for the first time. He voted in Winona, MN, where he attends college for Composite Material Engineering. Voting can be complicated when you are a student. I tend to encourage students to vote where they go to college. They live there for most, if not all of multiple years. As a League of Women Voter, I know that starting voting at a young age usually means a lifelong habit that builds active, involved citizens. My son, who was really excited for his mother to run for mayor, did not vote for me. In fact, he didn’t vote. He registered, but like a lot of students got caught up in college and didn’t send in his request for an absentee ballot in time. This year he registered in Winona. I loved getting his text telling me that he just finished voting. It was definitely a proud parent moment.
