Early morning fire extinguished

at N. Fargo storage garage complex

FARGO, N.D. (May 5, 2014) – At approximately 4:30 a.m. Monday, May 5, 2014, the Fargo Fire Department responded to an initial report of a fire behind 1119 19th Ave. N. The first crew on scene determined that the fire was in the storage garages located north of that address at 2101 12th St. N.

Fire crews found a storage garage fully involved in fire and extending to adjacent units. Forcible entry was needed to gain entry to the secured storage facility and the individual units. The fire was brought under control quickly, but a lot of time was spent going through the contents of the garages looking for extension of the fire. There was fire damage to eight units and smoke damage to the rest of the units in that building.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established and is under investigation. More detailed information will be given as it becomes available.

NDSU Main Library to host therapy

dogs to help ease finals week stress

Fargo, N.D., May 5 —Finals week is quickly approaching at North Dakota State University and the Main Library again will offer a special activity to help students relieve the stress that can come with a series of anxiety-filled tests.

Therapy dogs are coming

back to the Main Library.

Eight dogs from the F-M Obedience School and their handlers are scheduled to be at the Main Library Thursday, May 8, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The dogs first came to campus Dec. 12, as students studied for fall semester finals. The visit was such a success that library staff, along with Amber Bach-Gorman of the NDSU Counseling Center and Mary Ellen Steinhoff of the F-M Dog Obedience School coordinated the effort to bring them back.

“We had about 100 students come to the library to visit the therapy dogs last semester,” said Nicole Mattson, library Webmaster and public relations coordinator. “The students really enjoyed taking a break from their studies to relieve some stress by petting and playing with the dogs. The dogs seem to enjoy themselves, too.”

Other events at the Main Library include:

• Late-night snacks at 11 p.m. on May 6, 11 and 13.

• Puzzles, coloring pages, crosswords and Sudoku available for students.

• A coloring contest with prizes. The contest ends Monday, May 12, at noon.

• A candy fairy during the overnight hours.

The Main Library is scheduled to be open 24/7 beginning Sunday, May 4, at 1 p.m. through Friday, May 16, at 5 p.m. Commencement is scheduled for Saturday, May 17, at 10 a.m. in the Fargodome.

FISHING OPENER CREATES

TRAFFIC SAFETY CONCERNS

Drivers Warned Of Annual Traffic Problems

DETROIT LAKES– The fishing opener weekend of May 10-11 will be a busy traffic period, especially in northern Minnesota.

According to Regional Public Information Officer, Sgt. Jesse Grabow, “Some of the main concerns are drivers who are not paying attention, following too closely and speeding, especially around the lakes areas. Drivers are strongly encouraged to buckle up, take your time and pay strict attention to your driving.”

Drivers are also asked to keep an eye on their following distance and stay back far enough to prevent a crash with the vehicle ahead. Sgt. Grabow says, “Normally, the three-second following distance rule is taught, but many northbound travelers during the fishing opener and all summer are pulling trailers with boats or ATV’s, campers, and the like – all of which would require following at a distance of at least 500 feet, which would be farther back than the three-second rule.”

Motorists should be aware of all the safety rules for trailers, trailer equipment and for all special mobile equipment they are transporting to the area for recreation. Safe operation begins with the driver taking personal responsibility for their own actions behind the wheel as well as making sure that all vehicle loads are secure.

Sgt. Grabow adds, “Just slow down, buckle up, drive sober and pay attention, and we can all be a lot safer this fishing opener.”

31 citations issued during

distracted driving campaign

FARGO, N.D. –As part of a statewide effort, the Fargo Police Department conducted a heightened enforcement campaign focusing on distracted driving on three separate days in April (April 7, 16 & 24). A total of 31 citations were issued in Fargo including 18 distracted driving citations and one drug paraphernalia arrest.

“Distracted driving is the leading contributor to rear end crashes in Fargo,” says Fargo Police Sergeant James Kringlie. “A common statement we hear from drivers is, ‘I looked away for just a moment and when I looked up, the car was right in front of me and I couldn’t stop in time.’” The fine for texting and driving in North Dakota is $100. The ban applies for accessing or sending electronic data while operating a motor vehicle—even while stopped at a stoplight.
