You are invited to attend the Crops / Small Grains Update program at the American Legion in Moorhead on Tuesday, January 18, 2011 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The morning session will feature presentations by Mr. Mike Krueger, founder and President of The Money Farm, Casselton, ND; Mr. Mark Peihl, Archivist, Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County, Moorhead, MN; and Mr. Alan Slater, Regional Manager Barley Operations, Busch Agricultural Resources Inc., West Fargo, ND.
Mr. Krueger will deliver a detailed presentation on the fluctuating agriculture markets. Mr. Peihl will give a lively presentation on the 1897 flood and how it compared to the 1997 and 2009 events. Mr. Slater will give an update on agriculture in China and the 2011 barley market.
The afternoon session will feature the Small Grains Update. Presenters include Mr. John Oades, Vice President, US Wheat Associates; Dr. Jochum Wiersma, Small Grains Specialist, U of M Extension; Dr. Jim Anderson, Spring Wheat Breeder, U of M; and Dr. Mohamed Mergoum, Department of Plant Sciences, NDSU.
Mr. Oades has a wealth of experience working with wheat customers. He will draw upon US Wheat Associates’ extensive international network to describe what is happening to world wheat production and customer demand. He will provide insight into how the current situation will affect spring wheat prices. Dr. Wiersma will present the results of the 2010 wheat protein sampling project. This is the project where growers were asked to mail in wheat samples and field information. He will discuss next year’s project as well as share his thoughts on nutrient management tips for your farm. Dr. Anderson will present the results of the U of M research that compared variety performance in various locations throughout Minnesota in 2010. The results will include both on-farm and state variety trial locations. He will also provide the latest results from his expanded breeding program. Dr. Mergoum will discuss his current program and what additions he will make to address issues important to Minnesota wheat growers. He will also discuss important changes occurring in the spring wheat breeding industry.
Attendance is free, refreshments will be provided for the morning and afternoon sessions and a complimentary lunch will be provided at noon. Morning refreshments will be available starting at 8:30 a.m.
