City honors human rights activists


The Moorhead Human Rights Commission honored four activists Monday for their “integrity, creativity and commitment to principles” in working on behalf of all of the city’s residents.
Bill and Adair Grommesh (at left), Haroon Hayder and Lisa Arnold were chosen to receive the 2019 awards. The Grommeshes, who won in the nonprofit category, established Hope Inc.14 years ago to help people of all abilities live active and full lives through adaptive sports and recreational activities.
Recognized in the civic category, Haroon Hayder a champion of community involvement and an advocate for human rights, justice and equity who volunteers much of this time and has helped create many volunteer opportunities for others. Haroon created an M State campus club focused on volunteerism, runs a “Literacy through Library” program to help people with language skills, and is an advocate for the Yazidi community in Moorhead.
