“I cannot count my day complete, until the needle, thread, and fabric meet,” explained Becky Olson. As the owner and operator of Becky’s Sewing Center, Olson has been sewing professionally for the past 20 years. When it comes to making you garment fit perfectly for your special occasion or everyday use, Olson takes the time to listen to your needs because she wants you to look and feel your best.
Olson, who shares office space with her husband Gary’s Insurance business at 725 Center Avenue, began her business in their home and as it grew, more space was needed. She has sewed and altered wedding gowns, prom dresses, quilt tops, and military uniforms for individuals as well as local companies for many years. Olson’s seamstress abilities are a family tradition dating back to her great-great uncle, who was a tailor for the King of England. Her grandmother was also very active in the seamstress business. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
Raised on the family farm north of Glyndon with her parents and four sisters, teamwork was an important and essential aspect of family life. As the second oldest, she learned from a young age the importance of responsibility and dedication. Having no brothers, the Gilbery girls had to help with farming during harvest season by driving grain trucks, toeing trees, and mowing the yard. Many days began at 5AM and continued until the chores were completed. She fondly remembers her dad being very understanding and patient with them.
In her “spare” time Olson was an active member of the Moland 4-H Club as well as her young people church’s group. Her involvement in the community continued into adulthood and her efforts earned her the Mrs. Jaycees’ “Key Woman” award and the Mid-day Central Lion’s “Lion Member of the Year.” She also served as president of the Northwestern Minnesota ELCA, followed by being elected to the Women of the ELCA church-wide board.
Family and friends are important to Olson. She met her husband Gary on a blind date that eventually led to their 1961 wedding and raising their three sons. Olson explained that giving back to the community is an essential element and must be weaved into one’s life. “You can give back in different ways, she noted, by giving money or by giving your time. No matter how you do it, giving back to your community will touch many people’s lives and make the community special and creates meaning.”
One of those lives was a young lady who was going to her first prom. She needed alternations on her secondhand dress, which was soiled and needed a kind hand. Because of the sequins, drying cleaning was not an option. With the permission from the customer’s caretaker, Olson took the dress home and gently hand-washed it back to life. When the young customer returned for the final fitting, she was over joyed with pleasure and asked “Do you take hugs?” Of course was the answer. The young lady attended her first prom and the reports were that it was one of the best nights ever. Thanks to Becky’s Sewing Center in Moorhead, MN.
