As I write this week’s installment I can’t help but wonder if all of the money spent on campaign ads was worth it.

Seriously, how much good could be done with all of that money! Most estimates are saying right around 6 billion dollars will have been spent this election.

To give you an idea, that money could run the small business administration for one year. And all it went for was a bunch of ads to talk about a person running for office. Think of the help it could do in New Jersey right now. I have never donated nor will I ever donate to an election fund for that reason. I know I sound like I am on a high horse, however what good does most of that spending actually accomplish? You have a bunch of people talking about either how bad their opponent is or you have them talking about all of the things they are going to do when they get into office but won’t actually accomplish. It’s a sad waste. Having said that I am finally glad the election is over and we don’t have to listen to any more of these ads and we can finally get rid of the tacky signs off all of the lawns. I am going to quote a friend of mine from Ohio named Dave and I really hope this happens because it was a good one:

Dear Mr. Obama and Mr. Romney,

No matter who wins tomorrow, you must realize that half of America still hates you. Don’t let your victory go to your head.

Signed,

An American who isn’t hated by half the country (yet).

So no matter who won, it’s time to get down to work and turn this thing around! No more politics, just roll your sleeves up and burn the midnight oil. Our country is facing some very big problems and it’s time to get them in order.

UND Football closes out home season with win against Southern Utah

This year has had its ups and downs for the UND football team. After a road loss, UND came back to Grand Forks to face Southern Utah University and SUU’s NFL prospect quarterback in their final home game of the season. And what a game is was, with another exciting finish to a good first season for UND in the Big Sky Conference. It was senior day for UND and a lot of the guys were fired up for what would be their last game at the Alerus Center. I have gotten to know a few of the guys over the last few years and it was a bit surreal knowing this would be their last game that I could watch in person. Well, they did not disappoint at all. The game ended up coming down to the final play in which UND’s defense (which has had troubles this year) saved the game and came up with a game winning sack and fumble recovery for a 33 to 29 victory. This next week has UND in their final game of the season travelling to Northern Colorado with kickoff set for 1:05 pm.

Hardin earns Big Sky, CFPA weekly awards

Junior Greg Hardin has already been honored several times this season for his exploits as one of the top receivers in the FCS, but on Monday he was recognized for his work as a kickoff returner. Big Sky officials named him the ROOT Sports Co-Special Teams Player of the Week, while officials from the College Football Performance Awards lauded him as their National Kickoff Return Performer of the Week.

Hardin collected those honors after returning a kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown in the 33-29 victory over Southern Utah on Saturday. The return came at an important time in the game as UND had fallen behind 15-0 just over five minutes into the second quarter. For Hardin, the return score was the second longest in UND history and first since Ismael Bamba returned a kickoff for a touchdown against Stephen F. Austin in 2009. It was also the first of his career and 14th touchdown overall on the season. He leads the Big Sky in total touchdowns and also is tops in kickoff return average (30.1 ypr). Hardin’s Big Sky weekly honor is his second of the season. He was named the ROOT Sports Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 22 after breaking the league record with 333 receiving yards in a win over Montana. He was also named the CFPA National Performer of the Week and National Wide Receiver of the Week for that effort.
