As I sat in Ash’s hospital room recently, once again waiting for a doctor to arrive with more news and better answers than we’ve been getting, I was reading some of my emails and found this compilation of a few of my favorite quotes. I kept reading numbers three and six, and have come to the conclusion why number three didn’t pen his or her name to it; obviously, they never had to deal with the complexities of the medical world, and ditto for the Chinese wise man who coined number six.

Heartland Industries is providing a meaningful skill-building center for thirteen of their clients who have unique and higher needs that other agencies have not and for their coaches as well. Heartland also provides a volunteer program through the Moorhead High School’s vocational department that teaches students the skills they will need when completing their education and making the transition into adulthood and ultimately independence.

Congratulations to Moorhead Public Service on winning the Source Water Protection Award.
Moorhead Public Service (MPS) has the distinct honor of being named the recipient of the 2012 Source Water Protection Award for the state of Minnesota. Moorhead was nominated for the 2012 Minnesota Rural Water Association (MRWA) Source Water Protection Award by the Minnesota Department of Health. MPS’ Water Division staff accepted the award at the MRWA conference in St. Cloud, Minnesota, on March 7, 2012. The award is to recognize organizations and staff that demonstrate leadership, initiative, and a long-term commitment to source water protection efforts. It is an honor for MPS to be nominated for the award since there are 970 community water systems in Minnesota, most of which maintain source water protection plans.
MPS would like to thank its partners, including the Minnesota Department of Health, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Clay County, and the Buffalo Red River Watershed District, for their efforts to ensure that Moorhead has a safe, reliable source of water from the Red River of the North, as well as the Buffalo and Moorhead Aquifers, for many generations to come.

MRWA is a federally‑funded water organization in Minnesota, whose mission is “To provide the latest information, education, and technical assistance to protect our public waters and improve the quality of life in Minnesota.” While MPS is not a member of MRWA, MPS personnel attend MRWA training for certification credits, to network with MRWA staff, and to utilize information available on MRWA’s website at www.mrwa.com.
Moorhead Public Service Does Not Endorse HomeServe
Moorhead Public Service (MPS) customers are once again receiving solicitations in the mail from “HomeServe,” a company asking MPS customers to pay $4.99 per month for water service line coverage. HomeServe has solicited MPS customers in the past on at least two other occasions. The letter prominently states across the top, “IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING YOUR WATER SERVICE LINE.” Then it goes on to explain their service and collect the customer’s credit card information.
Many customers have called MPS noting their skepticism with this solicitation. “Moorhead Public Service is not endorsing this service from HomeServe,” says General Manager Bill Schwandt.
According to the Better Business Bureau’s website, several complaints have been filed regarding HomeServe. MPS wants to clearly inform our customers that we are not endorsing HomeServe or its services.
Scholarships Available to High School Seniors and College Students
The Moorhead Public Service Commission is proud to announce the allocation of $3,750 for its 2012 Scholarship Program, which includes the Moorhead Public Service Video Scholarship Contest and the Moorhead Public Service Public Power Essay Scholarship Contest. MPS’ scholarship program is designed to create an awareness of public power and the benefits of municipal utilities.
NEW THIS YEAR! MPS’ Video Scholarship Contest is now available to college students attending a post-secondary institution located in Moorhead!

This contest is available to 2012 graduating high school seniors whose legal guardians are customers of MPS. Awards include $1,000 for first place and $500 for second place. The first-place winner qualifies for an entry into a state-wide contest for up to $2,000 more in scholarships! An essay on “Municipal Utilities: Good for All of Us” must be submitted by 4:30 p.m. on March 30, 2012.
Moorhead Public Service Video Scholarship Contest
This contest is available to both high school seniors and college students. The college student must be attending a post-secondary institution located in Moorhead, Minnesota. The high school senior must be a 2012 graduate whose legal guardian is a customer of MPS. Awards include $1,000 for first place, $750 for second place, and $500 for third place. A video on “Conserving Electricity is Easier Than You Think” or “What Would a Day Without Water Be Like” must be submitted by 4:30 p.m. on April 30, 2012.

The previous announcements were sent by MPS as media announcements, and as I received all three in a relatively short time, I thought I’d combine them all for the citizens of Moorhead to be aware that your utility department does a lot more than take your money every month for water and electrical power! Personally, I’m proud we own our own in Moorhead –at least we know where it’s going and for what!
