ROLLAG DISTRICT 3 SCHOOL HOUSE RECEIVES NATIONAL HONOR

The Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County is pleased to announce that its District 3 Parke Township “Woodland School” near Rollag was named to the National Register of Historic Places in January. Built in 1895, the school was the last one-room rural school to close in Clay County after resisting the trend to consolidate until 1961. It was donated to HCSCC that same year. Since the 1980s, school alumni have met there the weekend before Labor Day weekend to reminisce. Much of the conservation work on the school over the years has been done by volunteers, including the 2014 re-painting of the exterior.

Over the last two years, HCSCC has received Minnesota Historical Society (MHS) grants to have the school house nominated to the National Register. Putting the school on the National Register makes it eligible for more MHS grants in the future to keep working on conservation measures.

The next step in the process is securing an historical architect to conduct an Historic Structures Report (HSR). The architect will closely examine the school inside and out and make recommendations for its long-term preservation. HCSCC recently received a $10,000 MHS grant toward hiring an historical architect. This project was made possible in part by the people of Minnesota through a grant funded by an appropriate to the Minnesota Historical Society from the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. HCSCC is currently accepting donations to complete this project. YHR Partners of Moorhead has been hired to complete the HSR, and work will commence in the spring.

Anyone who is interested in supporting this project with a donation can do so with a check to HCSCC sent to 202 1st Ave. N. Moorhead, MN 56560 with school HSR written in the memo line.

HORIZON MIDDLE SCHOOL’S THEATRE PERFORMS THE MUSICAL- JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH

MOORHEAD – Roald Dahl’s fantastical tale of a boy, his insect friends and their amazing journey across the ocean on a giant piece of fruit is coming to Moorhead. James and the Giant Peach opens February 23 at Horizon Middle School’s Performing Arts Center.

Featuring a wickedly tuneful score by the Tony Award-nominated team of Pasek and Paul (Broadway’s Smash Hit Dear Evan Hansen, Dogfight, A Christmas Story the Musical and the recent blockbuster feature-film The Greatest Showman) and a curiously quirky book by Timothy Allen McDonald (Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka, The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley), critics rave: James and the Giant Peach is a “Masterpeach!”

Shows will be held February 23-25 at 7:00 p.m. and on February 26 at 2:00 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center at Horizon Middle School. Tickets can be purchased online at www.moorheadschools.org/tix or by calling the box office at 218-284-2255.
