It’s a very good question. We’ve had only a handful of cases with one death being blamed on Ebola so far in the United States. But we had another good question pop up this past weekend. What if, and I know it’s a big “what if”, you found yourself coming down with symptoms of the Ebola virus? What if someone broke the quarantine they voluntarily agreed to put themselves under for 21 days? What if you were in the wrong place at the wrong time? Let’s say you where sitting down enjoying a nice meal at a fine restaurant when someone comes in to pick up a takeout order who was supposed to be under quarantine. It would scare the hell out of me! It happened when Dr. Nancy Snyderman and her crew returned to the United States after a reporting assignment to West Africa. Oh, but Bob, you can only contract Ebola when you come in contact with the bodily fluids of someone who is infected. I mean, what if the person had one good sneeze? There you go. You’ve got mist spraying all over the room especially if they didn’t cover their nose and mouth. Imagine if the staff of a medical professional leaves quarantine, because they couldn’t find someone to get them some Chinese takeout. You can see why her credentials may now be in question.
Then there’s the nurse in Maine who had returned from West Africa where she was helping in the Ebola fight, who was going to go to court because she didn’t want to be placed under quarantine. The judge and she agreed to terms and she’ll be free to roam and will be monitored until the incubation period ends November 10th.
The survival rate for Ebola has been put at 25 to 90 percent with 90 percent in the remote parts of West Africa, to 25 percent in countries with more modern medical facilities, such as the USA.
But back to the original question…What if a person with Ebola, for whatever reason, leaves a voluntary quarantine and has somehow got you infected? Should you die can they be charged with your murder? It’s a question I hope no court will ever have to consider.
It has happened again, but unfortunately not to me. From time to time when you go to various stores or restaurants you’ll get your receipt after paying your bill. Flip it over and look at the back side of that paper. It depends on the business of course but you could win anything $250 in gift cards to $1,000 cash, from laptop computers to new televisions. One fast food restaurant is offering free food items. In almost all the cases you are simply asked to fill out a little survey about your visit to the establishment. Some can be rather lengthy and some as short as a few questions.
A couple of years ago I asked the question on the KFGO if someone had ever won anything filling out these surveys. Sure enough a gentleman called in and had just left one of the local grocery stores. He had filled out the survey on his cell phone while in the parking lot. Before he got home with his groceries he received a phone call telling him to come back to the store as he had just won 5-$50 gift cards.
Now, the son of a good friend filled out an on-line survey for the pizza place he ate at a couple of weeks ago. Turns out he received an e-mail stating the he was a winner of $1,000. His check was going to be sent to him in the mail. All that for just taking five minutes out of your d
