As we move into Homecoming season for our colleges and high school, there is something particularly special about this one. This fall, Anne Blackhurst will be inaugurated as MSUM’s 11th President. I first met Anne in the hallway of McLean Hall. We were both asked to talk with a classroom on our personal philosophy of Leadership. It wasn’t public yet who had applied for the Presidency position but Anne admitted to the group that she did see herself in that role somewhere. I was inspired by her easy engagement with the students, and it didn’t go unnoticed about how she felt it was important for students to connect with the community around them. She later was instrumental in including me and other members of the community in discussions about facilities, and it was clear that when she said something, she meant it. I admire people that walk their talk, and clearly, President Anne is one of them. She not only walks it, frankly she runs. The theme for the Inauguration week is “Leading for the Long Run”. Anne is, literally, a marathon runner, and her philosophy of leading is reflective in that type of passion and focus. It’s no surprise that #Annefan has organically become a social media thing.
Because connecting with our community is a key component of Anne’s leadership philosophy, on Day One of Inauguration week (Monday, Sept. 22), there will be a Community Block Party from 5:30 to 8PM in the Campus Mall. It will involve games, music, food and fun for all ages. Parking is open and available, and we are all invited. I hope you can stop by and become an #Annefan too.
