Celebrate National Quilt Day on Saturday, March 21 viewing a trunk show of award-winning quilts made by Karen Boe from Langdon, ND. Karen will share her method of fabric appliqué as

part of the Spring Fever Workshops offered from 9 to noon. Other classes include a quilt-as-you-go table runner and arm-knit scarf.

Spring into Good Health with Walk This Way

FARGO, N.D. (March 17, 2015) –Spring is almost here and that means it’s time for Walk This Way! Mayor Tim Mahoney will help kick off this annual series of 13 walking/biking events on Tuesday, March 24, at noon at the Fargo City Commission Room. The walk will continue through the downtown skyway and there will be the option of walking outside (weather permitting). After the walk, samples of roasted beet and potato soup and roasted beet hummus, as well as beet seed packets will be available as part of the One Vegetable-One Community promotion.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, walking helps to lower the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, cancer, strokes, and also helps reduce cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure, manage weight, and improve mood. Research has also shown that walking helps calm nerves and stimulate relaxation.

There is no cost to participate and participants are eligible for prize drawings at each event. Individuals who attend five or more walks are entered into a final drawing for a chance to win a Sunday night stay at the Hotel Donaldson, a $50 West Acres gift card or a $50 Hornbacher’s gift card. Registered participants can ride free on Metro Area Transit buses during the week of April 20-25, by showing their Walk This Way passport. to recycle old phone books

FARGO, N.D. (March 16, 2015) – In preparation for the distribution of new phone books, the Solid Waste Department will be placing additional phonebook recycling bins throughout the city. They will be in place from March 16 through April 30, however, some locations will maintain phonebook recycling bins year round. Companies typically distribute phone books in March and April. Only phone books with glued bindings will be accepted. Spiral bound phone books cannot be accepted.

Firewood inspections

FARGO, N.D.– In an effort to manage the spread of Dutch elm disease, the Fargo Forestry Department has begun inspecting firewood at homes around the city. Dutch elm disease destroyed over 300 elm trees in Fargo last year. Storing or transporting elm wood with bark attached is prohibited by Fargo City Ordinance 19-0201. If you want to use elm as firewood, the bark must be completely removed. To dispose of logs containing bark, place them on the boulevard for pickup by March 25 and notify the Forestry Department at 241-1465. Area’s first Food Systems Advisory Commission to be held in Fargo

The Cass‐Clay Food Systems Advisory Commission (CCFSAC) will hold its inaugural meeting on Wednesday, March 25 from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm at the Fargo City Commission Chambers, 200 3rd Street N, Fargo.

The CCFSAC is a newly formed Commission is tasked with examining all levels of the local food systems and identifying ways to improve access to healthy, safe, local, and affordable food for all residents. Examining a food system takes into account all processes and infrastructure involved in food including growing, harvesting, processing, packaging, transporting, marketing, eating, and disposal/waste.

The Commission was formed following the recommendations of the Metropolitan Food Systems Plan completed by the Fargo‐Moorhead Metropolitan Council of Governments in October of 2013. Members of the CCFSAC include elected officials from Cass (ND) and Clay (MN) counties, the cities of Fargo and West Fargo in North Dakota and the cities of Moorhead and Dilworth in Minnesota. The Commission also includes five at‐large community members with an interest in, or expertise related to, food systems.

This meeting is open to the public and will include a 15 minute public comment opportunity where interested residents can voice their ideas, thoughts, and concerns related to improving/strengthening the local food system.
