“I believe that our families are the most important part of our lives and that each of us has an obligation to give back to the community that we live in,” explains Ken Norman, an attorney at Miller Norman & Associates, Ltd. In expressing his gratitude, he states that Moorhead has provided so many positive experiences to him and his family. “Life is a gift, and it is our opportunity and responsibility for us to give something back.” He and his wife, Marge, have been married for 42 years and they have raised their two children who both live in Moorhead. They enjoy the interesting life that four grandchildren provide on a daily basis.
Those are not just empty words to Norman. He has given back to the local community for many years and continues to do so from teaching courses as a Community Education instructor to serving as the President of the Moorhead Public Service Commission for many years. Norman is quick to point out a misconception that is widely held about MPS. He explains that MPS is a consumer-owned electric and water utility that is governed by a five-member board, which is appointed by the City Council and Mayor. The MPS board approves the utility budget and sets water and electric rates for the Moorhead consumers.
Norman noted that the law has always intrigued him. However, the route to a private practice, which began from his family’s home in East Grand Forks, included working at a local clothing store and a local roofing company to pay his own way through college. Norman received his A.A degree from Assumption College in Richardton, ND and his B.A. degree at Creighton University in Omaha, ND. He completed his education at the University of North Dakota Law School with a J.D. degree where he served as the student body president and enjoyed acting in local productions.
Norman has had many other work experiences before entering the world of law with the Stefanson Law Firm, including working at a funeral home in Omaha, NE and banking as a trust officer with the Merchant’s National Bank and Trust Company. He later had the opportunity to join Keith Miller in his law practice and he has been serving the Moorhead and surrounding communities ever since. Their present location in the FM building in downtown Moorhead provides a bird’s eye view of the community.
Norman is a certified real estate property specialist with expertise in estate planning, probate, business and real estate matters. For the past several years, he has also served as the City Attorney for Glyndon. Norman explains that the joy of his profession is that the practice of law allows him the opportunity to help others through the many issues facing them throughout their lives. He also noted that it’s rewarding to get to know many people throughout the region and to assist them with all aspects of their “legal” lives. “The relationship with clients and their families – watching the growth within the families as generational changes occur is an honor and a privilege. We share a level of trust that is based upon that essential characteristic which is implicit in everything we do.”
