Students, families and staff members at Ellen Hopkins Elementary School raised $2,000 for the United Way through a penny war in September that surpassed its $500 goal. Karina Schwindt’s fourth-grade class won the penny war and the opportunity to present the $2,000 check to United Way representatives during a brief presentation Sept. 24.
From Sept. 15-19, each classroom at Hopkins worked to fill its penny jar. Silver coins could be used to sabotage another classroom’s penny jar as classrooms battled for the right to present the donation to the United Way.
