Angela Smith from NDSU will present “Public History and Fargo’s Most Famous Madam,” her research about Melvina Massey, an African American woman who owned several properties, including the Crystal Palace, an 11-bedroom brothel that opened in Fargo in 1889, and who was a financially successful businesswoman and very open about her profession on the Northern Great Plains.

Victory Garden Presentation

Location: Grand Forks Public Library

Dr. Doug Munski & Steve Sagasar, USDA Extension Service Agent will offer a special presentation on the Victory Gardens of the World Wars of the United States.

This is also the last night the “Seeds of Victory: Home Gardening Posters from the World Wars” exhibit will be on display, showcasing 34 full-color war garden posters reproduced from the originals held by the North Dakota State Archives.

Pioneer Days:

Location: Bonanzaville in West Fargo

Rollin’ on the River 2014:

Rollin’ on the River will be holdingFamily Nighton Friday, August 15 along the shores of the Red River in East Grand Forks. Skaters, families and friends can get in on the action starting at 5:00pm when Race Packet Pickup begins. Below is a full line-up of the festivities:

Author Reading and Book Signing:

Author Matthew Barron will read from his new book,Valora, at Ferguson at 12 noon. He will be available to sign books from 11:00am – 1:00pm.

4th Annual Sonny’s Angels Bike Run:

Location: Garage’s Bar in Moorhead

Date: August 16

Time: 11:00am

Cost: Donation

Run departs at 11:00am from the Garage Bar. 4-5 stops through MN lakes area. Ends at Moorhead Duane’s Pizza 5 pm. Free will donation to join the ride. Raffle prizes throughout run. proceeds support Sonny’s Angels for Caregivers Left Behind, a support group for those who have lost a loved one to cancer or other illness. BMX Jam:

Location: Dike West in Fargo

Bikers, show off your tricks at the BMX Jam. All skill levels can participate in the exhibition. Helmets are required. Prizes given away each day.

West Fargo Parks Dog Show:

Location: North Elmwood Park Shelter in West Fargo

Date: August 18

Time: 5:00 – 7:30pm

Join us for the Seventh Annual West Fargo Parks Dog Show. Dogs will be judged and awards will be presented to the best groomed, best dressed, best trick, most unusual breed, cutest puppy, owner/dog look-alike, and best of show. Visit with area pet vendors and register for great door prizes. Free hotdogs and a beverage will be served while supplies last.

Dog Show registration will be from 5:00-6:00pm followed by Dog Show at 6:15pm. A Search and Rescue demo will be at 5:30pm. Dog Show registration is free.
