“Faulty electrical systems are dangerous whether you are a homeowner or a business owner,” explained Dave Rick, founder of Rick Electric, Inc. Raised on a farm near Breckenridge, MN, Rick developed an early interest in the power of electricity. He attended North Dakota State College of Science’s electrical program and later taught at the electrical apprentice school at NDSU.
Rick credits his successes to his family, a strong work ethic, and understanding the importance of working hard and smart. Most importantly, his wife Bev and their four children are the foundation and driving force for all of Rick’s success. Their sons Greg and Denny bought Rick Electric in 1998. Rick is proud that his two sons Greg, now the president of the company, and son Denny the vice president have followed his passion to light up the world and to keep the lights on.
Rick Electric, Inc. has been providing electrical services to the Fargo and Moorhead communities since 1964. An electrical contractor is a company that performs specialized construction work relating to the design, installation, and maintenance of electrical systems. As Greg Rick states, whether you are a homeowner, business owner, or government-contracting officer, our specialists can provide a range of services from new wiring to electrical maintenance and troubleshooting.
Dave Rick’s journey to self-employment began 50 years ago in December 1962 when he was laid off on Christmas Eve at his employer’s holiday party. After a few years of working for others, Rick’s request for a raise was denied. His continued struggles to earn enough money to take care of his growing family led him to self-employment.
The first few years of small business ownership are undoubtedly the toughest, and a huge test of entrepreneurial character. With Bev at his side, working the CB radio and attending to the bookkeeping, Rick Electric was born. Several of the early projects included the Clay County Jail, Holiday Inn addition and the Holiday Mall Shopping Center.
Today, Rick Electric employs approximately 40 employees and during the busy construction months grows to 70/80 employees. The company generally serves a radius of 200 miles in Minnesota & North Dakota. Several of the satisfied customers are Anheuser-Busch, Moorhead Public Schools, Concordia College, and the City of Moorhead.
President Greg Rick, who is responsible for the overall company operations, is quick to credit the company’s staff for their success: “When employees feel that the company takes their interests to heart, then the employees will take company interests to heart.” Vice President Denny Rick, who is responsible for project management and estimating operations concurs, “Your employees are the reason why your company will either succeed or fail.”
