“Plastering is one of the most ancient of the building handicrafts,” stated Roger Olson, owner and operator of Sig Olson & Sons Plastering, Inc. As a second-generation family business, Roger has been involved since 1975. His father, Sig Olson, began the Moorhead business in 1952 with a single vehicle and a great deal of talent and integrity. The company has had many changes over the years, evolving into a regional leader in the application of all kinds of plaster and stucco. One thing, however, has not changed and remains to this day: The founding principles of hard work and dedication to high quality construction in the plastering trade.

Roger Olson knows the area well as he was born in Dilworth and raised in Sabin, MN. He is an accounting graduate of Minnesota State University – Moorhead. As one of 10 children, he had to develop his negotiation skills early. Those skills were put to good use not only in business, but also with his own family of five children. He and his wife, Nyla, are enjoying their first grandchild, traveling, and spending family time at their Pelican Lake cabin. Nyla became an active business partner when Roger’s brother and co-owner Randy passed away in 2009. She is the office administrator and serves as the corporate secretary for the company. Nyla is from Sutton, ND and she graduated from the Legal Secretary Program at Interstate Business College.

, with eight employees, specializes in the trowel trades, on both the residential and commercial projects of all shapes and sizes. The services include repairs, remodeling, and new construction. Traditional trades associated with the hawk and trowel include plastering, stuccoing, installing EIFS (Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems), and spraying cementitious fireproofing and textures. Other services offered include lathing and some cultured stone installations.

Among the competition, Sig Olson & Sons Plastering is unique because it is the only unionized shop in the area. Olson points out that one unionized shop advantage is that a collective agreement establishes a set agreement that cannot be disputed until the contract expires. This makes the costs associated with pay and benefits more predictable and employee turnover is lower.

Another company uniqueness is the direct competition within the area’s four main competitors; three are located in Moorhead and one in West Fargo, ND. One of those in Moorhead is Fransen & Olson Plastering, owned and operated by Olson’s brother Ron. Even though it is somewhat unique, no fierce competitive battles are waged and they maintain a good family relationship.

The company business includes commercial and residential projects. Some of the more notable commercial projects include the Moorhead Buffalo Wild Wings, Fargo’s 25th Street South Vision Bank, West Acres Shopping Center, and the Ramada Plaza Inn and Suites. However, Olson also pointed out that no job is too big or too small.
