Unwanted Prescription Drugs

on Saturday April 26th

Moorhead, MN – On Saturday April 26th the Moorhead Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Through a partnership with the Moorhead Walgreen Stores we will be accepting your medications for disposal on Saturday April 26th. The Downtown Walgreens located at 8th Street and Main Avenue will participate form 10:00 a.m. to Noon. The Walgreen’s located at 8th Street and 30th Avenue South will both participate from Noon to 2:00 p.m.

The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked. Pills can be left in a bottle or put in a zip lock bag. Liquids should be sealed in a bottle and secured in a zip lock bag. We ask that no needles are put into the lock box.

317 pounds of medication have been collected over the last three years in Moorhead through this initiative. This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse.

Moorhead DARE Officer Valerie Kellen doesn’t recall a Moorhead student ever winning this competition in the past. This year’s theme was “D.A.R.E. to Express Yourself.” The contest was open for 5th or 6th grade D.A.R.E students, statewide.

Minnesota D.A.R.E., Inc. received hundreds of entries from around Minnesota. The top entries will receive special DARE prizes. These posters will be framed and put on display at DARE events throughout the State. Minnesota D.A.R.E. Construction Trades

Academy open to area teens

15 years and older, enrollment fee only $25, 3 college credits available

Moorhead, Minn.: The Herdina Academy for Construction Trades will be June 2 to 13 at Minnesota State Community and Technical College in Moorhead. The two-week session runs 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and a certified instructor supervises activities.

The Academy is open to North Dakota and Minnesota high school students ages 15 and older. Enrollment is limited! Students who successfully complete the Academy will earn three college credits from M State. The credits can be used for the carpentry, plumbing, refrigeration and air conditioning, or mechanical CAD programs at M State. Find out more by calling (701) 232-5846, emailing info@hbafm.com, visiting www.hbcfm.com or visiting www.facebook.com/TradesAcademy.

2013 Academy graduate Jose Chavez, Leonard, N.D., says, “The Academy opens up your eyes to what you want to do in the construction field, and what you don’t. You get to meet new kids, and it’s a blast.”

The Academy, now in its 17th year, will be held at M State for the eighth year. M State’s campus offers a myriad of opportunities to expose participants to the many specialty occupations within the construction industry including: blueprint reading, carpentry, casework, concrete, drywall, electrical, excavation, HVAC, landscaping, masonry, plumbing and more. Students will work side-by-side with industry and education professionals, learning about occupations, tools, safety requirements and skills required for satisfying and well-paying careers. They participate in classroom and hands-on learning, with the opportunity to experience first-hand how residential and commercial buildings are constructed.

2013 Academy parent Connie Oschner, Glyndon, Minn., says, “I have nothing but good things to say about the Herdina Academy for the Construction Trades. It offers the students an insight to so many trades and exposes them to all the options available. I would recommend it to all students! The instructors and area contractors who participated in the program were excellent and very open to the students’ questions. The Academy paved the way for my son to enter M-State’s construction management program without hesitation as to whether or not it was something he would be interested in. He continues to draw on the things he learned at the Herdina Academy.”

Student-built sheds will be available for sale through the 2014 Herdina Academy for the Construction Trades. Prices start at around $1,750 for an 8’ x 12’ shed. Contact Dave Kraemer at (218) 299-6912 or david.kraemer@minnesota.edu by May 15 if you are interested in pre-ordering. Limited customization is possible. Sheds will be complete by July and proceeds from the sale will be used to support the Academy in the future.

Sponsorship of the Herdina Academy is provided by: M State, Home Builders Association of F-M and its charitable organization, Home Builders Care of Fargo-Moorhead Foundation.A $500 scholarship from the Home Builders Care of Fargo-Moorhead Foundation will be awarded to an outstanding student who completes the Academy and plans to enroll in a construction-related field at M State-Moorhead or North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton.
