Make Your Own Rain Barrel

and Compost Tumble Workshops

River Keepers and Cass County Soil Conservation District are teaching a “Make Your Own Rain Barrel Workshop” and a “Make Your Own Compost Tumbler Workshop” this spring. Both workshops will be held at the Rabanus Park Shelter 4315 18th Avenue South in Fargo, beginning at 6pm. The “Make Your Own Rain Barrel” on Monday, April 28th for $84, and the Make Your Own Compost Tumbler on Monday, May 5th for $69. Cass County residents may be eligible for partial reimbursement of tuition. Participants must register by contacting Moorhead Community Education at https://communityed.moorhead.k12.mn.us or by calling (218) 284-3400.

Rain barrels are rainwater-harvesting systems that connect to a downspout from a house or building. They provide a great way to help save on tap water use, water dry lawns and gardens, save money and protect the Red River. Using rainwater to take care of your yard will also result in happier plants, as rainwater is free of the additives found in tap water. Rain barrels also reduce storm water runoff increasing water quality in the Red River, our local drinking water source.

Composting is a great way to reduce and repurpose food and yard waste, like grass clippings and leaves, by turning it into nutrient rich mulch for your garden or house plants. By “tumbling” the composter around the yard once or twice a week you could have a barrel full of compost in as little as two weeks. This workshop will also cover the basics of composting and provide instruction to construct various other composting systems.

Celebrate Arbor Day by

Planting Trees along the Red River

The City of Fargo Forestry Department, Fargo Park District, River Keepers and Cass County Soil Conservation District invite the public, families and volunteer groups to celebrate Arbor Day by planting 1,000 trees and shrubs along the Red River. This Reforest the Red event is on Tuesday, May 20th from 4-7 pm. at 1201 49th Avenue South in Fargo. Parking is available in the cul-de-sac and along 49th Avenue South.

This is fun for the whole family. Come for one hour or all three! There will be short training sessions throughout the evening. Hot dogs and refreshments will be provided while supplies last. Volunteers will dig holes, plant, mulch and water.

The purpose of the Reforest the Red event is to replace trees lost to development and cultural practices. The trees along the Red River create a buffer to maintain river bank stability, encourage the growth of native plants, improve water quality (the Red River is Fargo-Moorhead’s drinking water source!), and provide a habitat for river wildlife.

To volunteer, please contact River Keepers at christine@riverkeepers.org or 701-235-2895.
