Not a Democrat, Not a Republican: Not a Problem Libertarian Congressional Candidate Jack Seaman: By Jamee Larson

Albert Einstein defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. 2014 Congressional candidate Jack Seaman believes he is the answer to the insanity he sees plaguing our current form of government. Seaman is running as a Libertarian because he thinks he can make a difference in changing the scope of the national government. “If people want change, we have to do real change,” he said. “Things have been done the same way for over 100 years and look where we’re at.”

What is a Libertarian?

The Libertarian party is the third largest and fastest growing party in America. It was created in 1971 by people who realized that the politicians had strayed from America’s original libertarian function. Their vision is to return to “a world where individuals are free to follow their own dreams in their own ways; a world of peace, harmony, opportunity, and abundance.”

According to their website, Libertarians believe the answer to America’s political problems is the same commitment to freedom that earned America its greatness: a free-market economy and the abundance and prosperity it brings; a dedication to civil liberties and personal freedom; and a foreign policy of non-intervention, peace, and free trade as prescribed by America’s founders.

In 2010, over 800 Libertarian candidates ran for office, 38 of which were elected or re-elected to public office. By the end of the year, there were 154 Libertarians holding elected office.

Who is Jack Seaman?

Seaman and his family have lived in the Fargo/Moorhead area since 1985. He currently is the owner and operator of MinDak Gold Exchange in Fargo, where he is a precious metals dealer. A converted Republican, Seaman believes it is time for him to “put up or shut up” in regards to making a difference in government. “I’ve never been a politician,” he said. “I’m just a frustrated citizen trying to do what I can.”

Seaman believes the Democratic and Republican parties have morphed into one party and are largely special-interest driven. “We need to drastically change the scope of government,” he said. “Too much of Congress is taken up by elite millionaires who have lost touch with the people.” Having said that, however, Seaman knows that running as a third party is an uphill battle, acknowledging that the biggest challenge is money. “It is exceedingly difficult for a third party candidate to successfully run for office,” he said.” “The established parties have many more members, donors, and campaign dollars.” Indeed, Seaman’s campaign will be run on a grass-roots budget, making it difficult for him to secure equal opportunities. Difficult, but not impossible. “I can win,” Seaman proclaimed. “It will take a lot of work, but I can win.”

Where does Seaman Stand on the Issues?

Seaman believes the number one issue America needs to contend with is its fiscal health, specifically the country’s 17 ½ billion dollar debt. “That is a severe threat to the nation and our way of life,” he said. Without immediate action, Seaman believes there is a real possibility that the dollar will lose its designation as the world’s reserve currency. “Imagine waking up tomorrow to find the dollar has lost 40% of its value,” he remarked. “That is a very real possibility if things don’t change.” In particular, Seaman supports a balanced budget that reduces spending, and “real” entitlement reform.

Seaman stands on a platform that is socially accepting, demanding that the government stay out of people’s personal lives and bedrooms. “I absolutely support same-sex marriage,” he said. “Consenting adults should be free to choose their own sexual practices and personal relationships, and regardless of those preferences nonetheless receive the same protection, benefits, and validation under the Constitution.”

Seaman is also an advocate for the legalization of marijuana. “The war on drugs has failed,” he explained. “We need to stop throwing money away.” Seaman believes that individual states should be able to decide for themselves how they will prohibit or regulate drugs. In addition, he believes the “discontinuation of incarcerating non-violent drug offenders would relieve our bloated prison system and associated expenses.”

As far as amendments, Seaman believes the fourth amendment has been shattered and needs to be restored. “I do not support NSA information gathering or drone surveillance on U.S. citizens without a warrant,” he explained. “I do not support the NDAA section allowing for the arrest and indefinite detention of U.S. citizens without charge or trial.” Seaman is also a staunch supporter of the second amendment. “I fully support the 2nd Amendment and will oppose any legislation that restricts a law abiding citizen’s right to self-preservation,” he said.

Finally, Seaman would like to see American reduce its military footprint around the world and bring the troops home. “Let’s keep our troops here at home where they can help secure our borders, repair our infrastructure, keep us safe, and spend their paychecks in our economy,” he said. Seaman also supports greatly reducing our foreign aid budget, including completely stopping foreign aid to our enemies.

Why Jack Seaman?

Seaman believes he has both the skill and passion to make a real difference in Congress and vows to make decisions based on the needs of the people not ulterior motives and special interests. “I’m just a regular guy,” he said, “who wants to see real change.” All that he asks in regards to the election is for people to investigate the issues and vote for the best candidate, regardless of party affiliation. “Don’t write me off just because I am a third-party candidate,” he asked. “I can win.” Seaman would also like to ask supporters to assist in the grass-roots movement. “If you learn about me and like what I have to say, please spread the word.”
